After four amazing seasons, Netflix’s “On My Block” has come to an end. The latest season of the coming-of-age series takes place two years in the future, where the four friends — Monse Finnie (Sierra Capri), Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco), Ruby Martinez (Jason Genao), and Jamal Turner (Brett Gray) — come back together for one last adventure. And it did not disappoint.
If you’re already missing “On My Block,” then consider diving into one of these five shows with similar themes of growing up, dealing with love, loss, friendships, and everything in between.
“Snowfall” introduces viewers to 19-year-old drug dealer Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), who is on a mission to build a better life for himself and take care of his family and friends. Saint gets in over his head when he gets caught up with an undercover CIA operative running from a dark past who begins funding the drug cartels. The drama series is set during the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles and explores the impact it had. Like the group of friends from “On the Block,” Saint had to grow up far too quickly in order to survive.
In this gritty HBO drama series, watchers follow Zendaya’s character, Rue, and her friends as they navigate teenage drama, love, trauma, identity, drugs, sex and everything in between. “Euphoria” was created by Sam Levinson and also features Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Hunter Schafer, and Eric Dane.
“Skins” has unofficially been dubbed one of the best drama series to come from across the pond. It follows a group of Bristol City teens struggling to make it through adolescence without proper authority figures. The series offers some super heartwarming moments wrapped up in a lot of teenage drama and angst. It’s definitely an emotional rollercoaster.
While “Boy Meets World” is a bit on the kid-friendly side in the early seasons, it’s still a great coming-of-age series for everyone. The Disney series chronicles the life of Cory Mathews (Ben Savage), an awkward, curly haired kid, as he starts high school, college, and steps into adulthood. Viewers follow Mathews, his best friend Shawn (Rider Strong), his cool older brother Eric (Will Friedle), and the love of his life Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel). The friendship between Shawn and Cory is pretty similar to the friendship between Cesar and Ruby, one has a stable, two-parent household while the other struggles to stay on the right track without proper guidance.
“Gentefied” tells an all too relatable story of three Mexican American cousins who are forced to come together to save their immigrant grandfather’s taco shop and their neighborhood as gentrification shakes up their lives. The cousins are chasing the American dream, but that dream might be the very thing that causes destruction. The series stars Joaquín Cosío, J.J. Soria, Karrie Martin, and Carlos Santos.
