With summer in the rearview mirror and fall officially here, it’s only natural that we’ve got baking on our brains. And, as luck (or clever planning) would have it, Made In just launched a new piece of bakeware that will seriously upgrade our fall tables with flaky pies, tarts, and buttery, patisserie-worthy creations. Designed in collaboration with chef Nancy Silverton, the Baking Slab is something of a hybrid between a traditional pie plate, baking dish, and sheet pan, and totally unique in its design.
Like many great innovations, the idea for the Baking Slab started with a sketch. As one of the most acclaimed bakers in the world, and the face behind famed restaurants Osteria Mozza, Pizzeria Mozza, and others, Nancy knows a thing or two about bakeware. But in her many years in the kitchen, she could never find a piece of equipment that let her achieve the perfect crust-to-filling ratio on her favorite slab pies. It needed to have high walls and a large surface area to ensure everyone would get a decent slice, something that traditional pie plates and sheet pans just don’t offer. So, longtime fans and collaborators, Made In, stepped in to design something to her exact specifications.
The resulting Baking Slab is constructed from the same French-made porcelain that Made In uses for their line of classic baking dishes, and has a pure white glaze with a hand-painted rim. The porcelain’s proprietary recipe has been around for over 200 years and is naturally nonstick, super durable, and thermal-shock resistant, a feature that allows it to move seamlessly from the fridge to the oven (up to 650 degrees Fahrenheit), and makes it safe to use in the dishwasher.
Aside from its beautiful aesthetic, the Baking Slab’s dimensions are what sets it apart from any other baking or pie dish you’ve likely ever used. Per Nancy’s guidance, it’s wider than a baking dish and longer than a 1/4 sheet pan, so you can achieve crusts that are crisp and flaky, and enough perfectly filled slices to feed a crowd. And while the Baking Slab is ideal for making pies, there’s no limit to what you can use it for, including brownies, focaccia, sheet cakes, pan pizzas, and dessert tarts. Plus, the Slab’s two handles are cleverly positioned below the lip of the Baking Slab, so you can move your creations in and out of the oven and carry them to the table without disturbing the crust with an oven mitt or towel.
It’s not every day that a cookware brand develops a truly one-of-a-kind piece of equipment, but with the Baking Slab, Made In has done just that.
