Interior designer Oyin Akintan and her husband landed in a new Brooklyn rental just before the world started shutting down last year, which ended up being a great move since their space turned out to be, in Oyin’s own words, “exactly what the doctor prescribed to heal.” You may recognize her apartment from her home tour. Her space is already gorgeous, but even pro designers need a refresh every once in a while. So, we asked Oyin if she’d be willing to work with us on a summery bedroom refresh, and she happily said yes.
Oyin describes her style as minimalist with a twist. For her bedroom refresh, that meant deciding on a color palette to set a summery mood; finding some furniture and bedding basics that could go with the flow; and accenting it all with wall art, sculpture, and greenery that help tie the room into the rest of her apartment’s style. To get it all done we turned to At Home, the home decor superstore. In just one trip, Oyin found everything she needed to refresh her bedroom with a brand new color palette, warm-weather bedding, and plenty of character-filled accents. Let’s see what she brought home!
Oyin’s Home Haul: Bedroom Refresh
Use color as a starting point
Oyin started planning her bedroom refresh by deciding on a color palette—a smart way to help narrow down decor choices. She went with a base palette of gray and green, which is a calming combination that also left room for some fun pops of color here and there. To set the stage, she found a gray area rug and dressed the bed with a lightweight quilt set to create a neutral foundation. She added color and texture with accent pillows that have pops of green alongside others with pompoms and other little textural flairs. Faux flora in chic cement planters really helped bring the color theme together, while also framing the bedroom and making it feel like a more calming space.
Personal touches add big style
In line with all the spaces she designs for her clients, Oyin wanted to make sure her bedroom had a few style touches that felt especially personal. For her, that meant faces. “I have a thing for faces,” Oyin says, and the Afro-Modern art throughout the rest of her apartment reflects that, so it made sense to bring the theme into the bedroom as well. At Home has a huge range of decor styles to choose from, and the ceramic faces (excuse me, vases) from their Tracey Boyd Collection fit right in with Oyin’s personal style. As she puts it, every time she walks into At Home she finds that something that can make a space feel personal and complete.
